Read drill-bit material and use labels
The cutting tool’s material, intended workpiece, dimensions and holder are different fields. Colour and a familiar shape cannot replace the exact accessory description.
Updated:

Separate the accessory material from its intended workpiece
Two named Bosch catalogue examples separate these fields. Metal Drill Bit HSS-R Set19,order2607017151,identifies high-speed steel (HSS) as its material and lists iron,steel,non-ferrous metals, grey cast iron and hard plastics as intended workpieces. Masonry Drill Bit Set5,order2607019438,instead describes carbide-tipped masonry bits suitable for hammer drilling. HSS names the bit material; metal or masonry names the stated application. Neither is a colour code.
Choose from the identified workpiece and the exact accessory description, then confirm the tool-side connection and operation requirements. The HSS-R label does not grant masonry use; a carbide-tipped masonry description does not approve every concrete or wall condition. These are manufacturer-listed distinctions, not our drilling tests, and the historical photographed bits are not claimed to be these current sets.
A description of what a drill bit is made from or coated with is not the same field as the material it is intended to drill. Keep those labels separate when reading a listing. A useful description also identifies the exact accessory, dimensions, shank and any conditions attached to the intended use.
Start with the workpiece you can identify and the manufacturer’s relevant accessory information. Do not convert an unknown material into a confident selection by choosing a harder-sounding label or a larger set. This page explains purchase records rather than how to drill an uncertain object.

Do not identify suitability from colour alone
Different photographed bits can have similar colours while carrying different specifications. A surface appearance does not provide the exact alloy, coating, condition, intended material or manufacturing information. A small online image can also hide the working-end geometry or identifier that would distinguish products.
The three source photographs show twist bits, small diamond bits and a separate single bit. They demonstrate actual physical forms, not a compatibility chart or comparative durability test. We have not tested these photographed accessories and do not infer their complete intended applications from the pictures.

Keep size conversion outside the material decision
Using the exact relationship of 25.4 mm per inch, one-eighth inch converts to 3.175 mm and one-quarter inch to 6.35 mm. These are arithmetic examples, not measurements of the pictured bits. The conversion does not tell you whether an accessory has the appropriate cutting material or intended workpiece.
Similarly, a machine’s chuck capacity does not establish every accessory’s permitted operation. Record the dimensional and connection questions independently from the material and use fields. A matching nominal size can leave the rest of the selection unresolved.

Compare the complete accessory description
Use the exact product code and current manufacturer description to compare the accessory with the identified tool and task. Preserve any limits rather than reducing the description to a single material word. A mixed set may include multiple accessory families that need different interpretations.
If the seller does not provide a field that matters, keep that gap visible in the purchase enquiry. Do not assume approval for impact use, a particular holder or a specialist material simply because a packet says drill bits. This guide does not recommend adapting a shank or modifying an accessory to close a mismatch.

Save a selection record that can be checked later
A useful record contains the exact tool, accessory code, intended workpiece, material or coating description, dimensions and remaining conditions. Keep the relevant manufacturer source and the date it was reviewed with the seller’s written contents list. This makes a later replacement more traceable than matching a colour from memory.
The outcome is a documented shortlist with uncertainties preserved. It is not an operating procedure, a guarantee of hole quality or a diagnosis of a damaged or worn bit. Follow the complete instructions and obtain appropriate assessment where the actual material, equipment condition or task is uncertain.
