Separate socket drive size from fastener size
A socket has a tool-side drive and a fastener-side opening. Record both, along with profile and permitted application, before comparing a set.

Two socket sets with genuinely different coverage
The Bosch14-piece1/4-inch set1600A02BY0 and60-piece1/4+1/2-inch set1600A039J8 make the difference concrete. Both include ten1/4-inch-drive sockets from5 to13mm, including5.5mm. The60-piece set adds a separate1/2-inch ratchet and seventeen1/2-inch-drive sockets spanning10–32mm, plus16/21mm spark-plug sockets and bits.
If your documented manual-fastener list fits the smaller set, the larger count is not automatically useful. If you need the listed larger socket sizes and1/2-inch connections, the14-piece set leaves a genuine gap. Confirm every required size because a range does not contain every intermediate number. Neither listing establishes that its ordinary chrome sockets are approved for a powered impact wrench, and neither ratchet replaces a torque wrench.
The drive size is not the size of the nut or bolt the socket fits. A buying record needs both the connection to the ratchet or other authorised tool and the opening that engages the fastener. It also needs the opening profile and any use restrictions. A catalogue photograph cannot fill in a missing specification.
This distinction matters when comparing apparently similar socket sets. One set may supply useful fastener sizes but belong to a different drive family from your existing handle. Another may include adapters while omitting the actual socket you need. Keep those as separate differences instead of reducing the comparison to the number of pieces.

Convert a written nominal size carefully
Using the exact relationship of 25.4 mm per inch, a quarter inch converts to 6.35 mm, three-eighths inch to 9.525 mm and half an inch to 12.7 mm. These conversions explain the written nominal sizes; they do not certify the manufactured tolerance, retention or fit of two products.
Do not round a drive description to a nearby fastener size and use it as the socket-opening specification. Equally, a metric fastener-side opening does not by itself tell you whether the tool-side drive is metric, imperial or described by a named nominal family. Copy both catalogue fields explicitly.
Keep the fastener profile in the comparison
The opening’s profile, size and intended fastener remain distinct from the square drive. A hex bit, a socket and a driver adapter may all appear in the same case while doing different jobs. The photographs here show that variety; they are not a test of interchangeability or maximum force.
Record the fastener requirement from the appropriate documentation rather than guessing from a worn head or a photograph. This is a selection checklist, not advice to apply force to an uncertain fixing. Where a torque setting or safety-critical connection matters, use the prescribed tool and competent procedure.

Separate manual accessories from impact-approved equipment
Do not infer impact suitability from the fact that an accessory connects to a powered tool. The exact socket, adapter and driving tool require the manufacturer’s declared intended application. Appearance, finish and a broad marketing label are not a complete approval for a high-load or safety-critical task.
A set comparison should show which components are manual accessories and which, if any, have explicit permission for the intended powered use. If that information is missing, leave it unresolved. This guide does not approve adapter stacks, choose a torque setting or establish a safe load for the pictured equipment.

Count useful components rather than every item in a case
Make an inventory with one line for each relevant socket, bit, extension and adapter. Mark which actual household task it covers and whether the handle or storage case is included. Large piece counts can combine many useful components or many components that do not match your requirements.
The next action is a written set-to-task comparison containing the drive, opening, profile and intended-use evidence. Preserve the seller’s complete contents list and the manufacturer’s restrictions with the receipt. No current prices, stock availability or hands-on durability results are supplied by this page.
